Northeastern Somalia got its first parliament.

The new members of the Northeastern State Parliament were sworn in, paving the way for the election of a new speaker and two deputies, who will later host the election of the speaker and deputy speaker in Las Anuda. The assembly consists of 83 members, including 79 men and four women, and relies on a power-sharing system among the state’s clans.

Thirty-seven members of parliament were from the Sanaag region, 30 from the Sool region, and 16 from the Togdheer region.

Parliamentarians and members of parliament began intensive campaigns to meet with the new representatives to encourage them to vote. They also began meetings with local leaders and clan representatives to discuss the electoral platform.
